Importance of Funeral Insurance for Foreigners

Funeral insurance, especially policies with repatriation benefits or riders, can be immensely helpful for foreigners, including expatriates and foreign workers, in Malaysia. Repatriation of human remains is a complex and costly process, and funeral insurance can significantly alleviate the burden on the deceased’s family.

Here’s how funeral insurance can assist with foreigners’ repatriation:

Covers Exorbitant Repatriation Costs
  • Repatriating a body from one country to another is significantly more expensive than a local funeral. Costs can include specialized embalming (required for international travel), hermetically sealed caskets, air cargo fees, customs clearance, and ground transportation in both the origin and destination countries.
  • Reports indicate that repatriation costs from Malaysia can range from *RM 10,000 to RM 20,000 or even more*, depending on the destination country (e.g., costs to India are cited at around RM 12,000 – RM 16,000, while to the UK, it can be around £3,250 for flight and basic services). Funeral insurance can cover these substantial expenses, preventing the family from facing a crippling financial burden.

Dealing with a death in a foreign country is a bureaucratic nightmare. Funeral insurance providers or their appointed assistance companies often offer comprehensive repatriation services. This includes:

  • Coordination: Liaising with local authorities (police, hospitals, National Registration Department – NRD), embassies/consulates of the deceased’s home country, airlines, and funeral directors in both Malaysia and the destination country.
  • Documentation: Assisting with obtaining necessary documents like the death certificate, embalming certificate, sealing certificate, export permits from Malaysia, and import permits for the destination country. This is a complex process often involving multiple government agencies and can be challenging for grieving families unfamiliar with local laws and languages.
  • Arrangement of Transportation: Managing the booking of flights and specialized ground transport for the remains.
The loss of a loved one is already a traumatic experience. When it occurs abroad, the added stress of navigating unfamiliar legal systems, language barriers, and complex logistics for repatriation can be overwhelming. Funeral insurance with repatriation services removes this immense practical and emotional burden from the family, allowing them to grieve without additional stress.
International repatriation involves strict regulations regarding embalming, packaging, and documentation to prevent health risks and ensure smooth transit. Insurance providers work with experienced repatriation specialists who are familiar with these international standards, ensuring that all procedures are followed correctly.
For foreign workers, employers often bear the responsibility for repatriation costs. Policies like the Foreign Workers Insurance Guarantee (FWIG) or specific riders under Social Security Organisation (SOCSO/PERKESO) (e.g., Funeral Repatriation Cost benefit, which might cover up to RM4,500 – RM7,500 depending on circumstances) aim to cover these expenses. However, these limits may not be sufficient for the full cost of repatriation, especially to distant countries. A dedicated funeral insurance or a comprehensive group policy can bridge this gap and provide more adequate coverage.
